Following a comprehensive restoration, an impressive historical building in Ticino shines again with new splendour, as a successful symbiosis of the past and the present. Natural materials, a sustainable approach to the restoration, and a harmonious integration of nature and architecture make this palazzo-style residence a unique concept for living.

The elegant 19th-century building, a historical palazzo in Agra, Canton of Ticino, underwent an elaborate restoration between 2021 and 2024. The palazzo is in a prestigious location, enjoying many hours of sunlight. It was originally built as a family residence in 1845, by Don Alberto Poncini. Later, Palazzo Poncini became a hotel for relatives of tuberculosis patients, and ultimately, as a holiday home: that particular use ended in 1980s.

The restoration, headed up by the Lugano-based architect firms Bruno Huber Architetti and Renzetti & Partners, made a point of preserving the palazzo’s historical structures. Another focus was the use of high-quality, eco-friendly materials like granite, lime plaster and wood. The detailed, authentic restoration of the facade led to its inclusion on the canton’s cultural heritage list. A core aspect of this project was the integrated concept of connecting architecture and nature, with the spacious gardens being one of the ways this is manifested. These are used to grow medicinal and culinary herbs, fruits and vegetables, as well as vines whose grapes are processed on-site. These organically grown products are used by the residents, who can get them right from their very own gardens.

Covering an area of 2,400 square kilometres, the residence houses 16 custom-designed modern apartments over four storeys. A recreation zone with an outdoor pool and garden kitchen provides additional comfort. The building's interior spaces combine natural materials with a modern, balanced aesthetic. The Oak Crema parquet floors from our Villapark collection were selected because of their natural look and lasting quality. The B-Protect® surface treatment preserves the natural matt look of the wood while making it easier to care for and offering additional UV resistance. One particular feature here is that Bauwerk Parkett’s one-strip planks are not just installed in the classic way on the floor, but also on the high ceilings, creating an extraordinary, unconventional and beautiful room experience.

The successful combination of historical heritage, modern design and architecture that is close to nature makes this restored palazzo-style residence a forward-looking living concept that builds a bridge between the past and the future.
