RELAXED STRUCTURE

The interplay of different typologies creates a dialogue between the past and present. Thus, the historic house is reminiscent of the locality's history, but it is also simultaneously embedded in a new, contemporary context. The three modern, flat-roof buildings form an urban extension to the first row of houses. These different layers are grouped together by a central piazza, creating a lively landscape and a small, private neighbourhood.

Due to their individual locations and mutual spatial interlocking, the impression of independent houses is created, which in turn supports the harmonious structure between nature and the man-made environment. The rooms within the buildings reflect a village structure. With its quasi-flowing hedgerow plants, the landscaping concept mirrors the characteristics of the terrain at the foot of mount Pfannenstiel

The exteriors of the houses are based on typical Zurich country houses. For example, the sandstone base provides a very traditional element. The building materials used, as well as the restrained and carefully chosen colours of the different houses, are a subtle element, reflecting the local building tradition without imparting an overly rustic style. The large windows, however, are very contemporary. In this way, the Zurich architect Martin Gautschi achieves a balance between tradition and modernity. This balance is also reflected in the houses' interiors. The floor plans of the apartments (33 in total) are characterised by bright, open rooms. This spatial flow is also emphasised by the choice of floor covering. The generous one-strip planks of natural-oiled oak are custom-made by the parquet specialist Bauwerk Parkett. The unique sizing (2800 x 120 x 11 cm) creates a visual sense of calm that accentuates the basic idea of the design. The subtle grey colour appears particularly modern; at the same time, the wooden texture of the flooring creates a cosy atmosphere. The white fixtures provide a pleasant contrast. Thanks to its position and furniture-like design, the free-standing kitchen island made of walnut veneer is the focal point of the open living and dining area. The functional kitchen back wall is kept a neutral white. The penthouse apartment impresses with another, beautiful detail: a ground-level corner fireplace that represents the perfect marriage of nature and architecture.
